My Journey of Becoming a Global Citizen

I still remember the thrill of my very first airplane ride at the age of 12. I was headed to Montego Bay, Jamaica, on a family vacation that would change me more than I ever expected. The warmth of the sun, the rhythm of the culture, and the beautiful differences in everyday life stirred something in me that has never quieted down. I was hooked—not just on the destination, but on the awakening that comes when you step outside your familiar world.

During high school, my world continued to expand. My family welcomed international students into our home, and through them, I learned about cultures I hadn’t yet visited. Eventually, I became an international exchange student myself, living in Germany—learning what it was like to be in a place where I didn’t understand the language, where almost all the foods were new, and young people enjoyed a more open and permissive social life. It was exhilarating and, at times, disorienting. But with every challenge, I became stronger and more self-assured.

In college, in spite of my parents' concerns, I set off for Bogotá, Colombia. There I lived with a local family while studying Spanish and Latin American politics. The food, the history, the music—it all pulsed with life. Living in Bogotá taught me not only about a different society but also about the parts of myself that thrive in unfamiliar territory.

Since then, my passport has become a scrapbook of both personal and professional adventures: remote villages, bustling cities, silent retreats, and cross-cultural collaborations. And right now, as I write this blog, I’m settling into an extended stay in Castlemaine, Ireland—another chapter in a lifelong love story with the world.

Through it all, adventurous travel hasn’t just shown me new landscapes—it’s grown me. It’s refined my inner compass and revealed untapped layers of strength, empathy, and creativity.

Six Essential Skills Gained Through Adventurous Travel

Here’s the truth: stepping into the unknown teaches you things that staying comfortable never will. These six skills are essential for anyone who wants to live a bold, resilient, and fulfilling life:

  1. Adaptability Things go wrong when you travel—missed trains, wrong directions, strange food, unexpected weather. But each hiccup is a chance to learn flexibility and think on your feet. Adaptability fosters inner confidence and the ability to recalibrate quickly—an essential skill in today’s rapidly changing world.

  2. Cross-Cultural Communication Even if you don’t speak the local language, you learn how to connect. Body language, patience, kindness—these become tools. Learning to communicate across differences enhances your relationships, your leadership, and your ability to resolve conflict.

  3. Perspective-Shifting Seeing how others live invites you to question your own assumptions. You begin to understand that "normal" is relative, and that truth, beauty, and values look different in different cultures. This deepens empathy and sharpens your ability to see complex problems from many angles.

  4. Problem-Solving Every traveler becomes a resourceful problem solver. How do I find food when I can't read the menu? What’s the cultural custom in this situation? Problem-solving in unfamiliar places boosts your ability to remain calm, think creatively, and act decisively in high-stakes situations.

  5. Resilience From dealing with jet lag to culture shock, travel builds emotional stamina. You get knocked down (maybe even sick in a foreign country), and you get back up. Resilience learned abroad carries over to your business, your relationships, and your personal vision.

  6. Self-Trust and Empowerment When you navigate a new city alone or make a new friend in a place where you know no one, something shifts. You realize you can handle more than you thought you could. That sense of empowerment becomes a foundation for every dream you dare to chase.

Top 3 Excuses for Not Traveling—and How to Overcome Them
  1. “I can’t afford it.” Reality check: Travel doesn’t have to mean five-star resorts. Hostels, homestays, off-season flights, and even work-exchange programs make travel affordable. Start small: consider a weekend cultural trip, joining a local language exchange group, or saving a small amount each month for your next travel adventure.

  2. “I don’t have time.” Life will always be full. You make time for what matters. Could you combine travel with remote work, a sabbatical, or family time? Even a two-week trip can shift your mindset for a lifetime.

  3. “It’s scary to go somewhere new.” Yes, it is. And that’s where the growth lives. Fear is a sign you're expanding. Start with a place that is safe and welcoming, perhaps one where you speak the language or have a local contact. You’ll be amazed at how quickly your courage builds.

Travelers Carry These 3 Powerful Attributes:
  1. Initiative – They go for it, even if they’re unsure how it will turn out.

  2. Openness – They stay curious and nonjudgmental in unfamiliar situations.

  3. Inner Confidence – They’ve faced the unknown and know they can handle it.
